Alicia Raquel Jones-Lumbuz was born in Jamaica and raised in Puerto Rico, the Washington D.C. area, and Florida. In 2007, Alicia moved to Houston from Orlando, FL, to become the founding teacher of KIPP Sharpstown College Prep, where ALL students take fine arts. She is a proud Afro-Latina and HBCU alumna. Alicia received her B.A. in Music and Information Systems from Oakwood University in Huntsville, AL. After leaving a corporate career in healthcare, she received her M.A. in Music Education from the University of Central Florida. She has participated as a high school choral clinician for the Kentucky-Tennessee Festival of the Arts and a middle school choral clinician for the Florida Festival of the Arts, where she conducted a choir of over 400 voices.
Alicia has worked with the Mayor of Orlando as one of the creative coordinators of the Martin Luther King, Jr Parade and Concert. She was also one of the music coordinators for the Zora Neale Hurston Festival in Eatonville, FL. In addition, she has worked at Disney World as one of the vocalists and performers. She has performed on BET Bobby Jones, Disney World Night of Joy, House of Blues, and opened up for Cece Winans, Karen Clark Sheard, United States Senate Chaplain Barry Black, and other Christian artists. In addition, she has served as music director, musician, worship leader, and choral director for Spanish and English churches.
In Florida, she is one of the founders of Vineyard Church, a church for younger generations who may not feel comfortable in a traditional church environment. Currently, she serves as music director, worship leader, and choir director at West Houston Seventh-day Adventist Church, a multicultural church of 52 different nationalities. Alicia has also served on the Texas Choral Directors Association Board in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. Her choir students have performed in Disney World, Carnegie Hall, House of Blues, Jones Hall, Wortham Theatre, KIPP Zoo Lights Festival, and the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, TN. Her choir has also received Superior ratings and was awarded Overall Best Performance. Alicia Jones is currently pursuing her Ph.D. in Christian Worship from Liberty University.
Alicia is a passionate educator of the arts and Christian worship and a strong advocate for social justice and artistic equity. She loves to harmonize, play the piano, dance, read, cook, travel to beach resorts, and spend time with her JamKenyaRican family; her husband, their three children, ages 14, 8, and 6, including her mom, who currently has Alzheimer’s/Dementia.
