Porter, Texas
Evan Farmer is the Orchestra Director at Kingwood Park High School. He began playing the cello in 5th grade as part of the Klein ISD 5th Grade Strings Program. In middle school, he switched to playing the bass. During his sophomore year of high school, he got his first teaching experience assisting Keith Markuson, Nathan Fleshner, and Cathy Fishburn with the 5th grade strings program. He volunteered throughout high school until graduation when he attended the University of Houston.
While at UH, he studied with Dennis Whittaker and performed as part of the UH Symphony, the UH Wind Ensemble, the UH Women’s Chorus, Cougar Brass, and The Spirit of Houston Marching Band. He graduated in 2009 with his Music degree and accepted his first position at Riverwood Middle School, as the assistant director to Shirley Astwood.
When Mrs. Astwood retired in the spring of 2012, Mr. Farmer was promoted to Head Director and served in that capacity for 6 years. During his time at Riverwood, Mr. Farmer consistently earned sweepstakes at the UIL Concert and Sight-reading Contest, in addition to winning several Best in Class awards at The Space City Showcase of Music and The Alamo Showcase of Music Festivals. In 2017, Mr. Farmer was invited to conduct one of the Region 22 Middle School Orchestras. With all of the awards his ensembles have received, his favorite moment was watching his first two All-Staters perform in 2016!
In 2018, he became the first assistant orchestra director at Summer Creek High School. Alongside director, Kyle Davis, the SC Orchestras received the program’s first superior rating with a sub non-varsity orchestra. Later that year, they would go on to win the Bluebonnet Festival’s Best in Class, for both the Varsity and Non-Varsity Orchestras, Best Orchestra, and Best Overall Ensemble. In the spring of 2022, under the direction of David Irish and Mr. Farmer, the Summer Creek Chamber Orchestra received an invitation to the Music for All National Festival!
In the fall of 2022, he began his 14th year teaching as the new Orchestra Director and Fine Arts Chair at Kingwood Park High School.
Mr. Farmer is an active member of TMEA, TODA, and TMAA.
When not teaching his orchestra classes, Mr. Farmer still coaches the 8th grade girls soccer team at Riverwood Middle School. His teams have won district championships 4 times during his 8 years as the coach. When he does get away from school, he is a huge Houston sports fan and directs his church’s youth worship band. Mr. Farmer says the best team he plays for is his wife, Amanda, their daughters, Riley and Shelby, and their puppy, Ruby!
