Joseph Akers

Joseph Akers is a 1996 graduate of North Shore High School in Galena Park ISD. In 2000 he graduated with a Bachelor of Music degree in All-Level Music Education from East Texas Baptist University, where he studied under former TMEA President James A. Moore. Following his studies at ETBU, Joseph studied under Dr. Cody Garner at The University of North Texas. In 2009, Joseph earned a Master of Education Administration degree from Lamar University. Joseph is a bi-vocational minister who leads the music ministry at Windwood Presbyterian Church as well as teaching in the public school system of Cypress-Fairbanks ISD. Joseph has been working in music ministry since 1999. He has been teaching choir in public schools since 2002. Joseph began his teaching career at W.C. Cunningham Middle School and then moved to the high school level where he worked with Daniel Ponce at Galena Park High School in Galena Park ISD. In 2007 he began leading the Choir Program at Cypress Springs High School in Cypress-Fairbanks ISD. Since 2011, Joseph has been serving as the Director of Music & Worship at Windwood Presbyterian Church in Houston, Texas. Joseph and his wife Meredith live in Cypress, Texas with their two children, Madison (11) and Jackson (7). Under his direction, choirs have received numerous awards including U.I.L. Sweepstakes Honors at annual UIL Concert and Sight-Reading evaluations and numerous awards including “Outstanding Overall” at festival contests. His professional affiliations include Texas Music Educators Association, the Texas Choral Directors Association, as well as being an active vocal judge for the Texas Music Adjudicators Association. In addition to performing domestically, Joseph has traveled internationally with the Windwood Choir. They have taking performance tours to such locations as Germany & Austria (2013), England Scotland (2015), Italy (2017), and Canada (2023).
