Bay Area Chorus of Greater Houston
He was born and reared in Texas, earning his music degrees in music education and conducting from Texas A&M University, Kingsville and from the University of Houston School of Music. Before joining the faculty at Pepperdine University, Malibu in 1995, as a Professor of Music and Director of Choirs, Pullen directed award-winning high school programs in Texas for 24 years, teaching for the majority of the time in the Clear Creek Independent School District. In 1978-1979, Pullen conducted the University of Houston at Clear Lake City Community Orchestra, now called the Clear Lake Symphony. He also served on the faculty of Abilene Christian University for six years as an Associate Professor of Music and Director of Choral Activities. Pullen’s choirs have performed for the Texas Music Educators Association, the California Music Educators Association and the National Convention of the American Choral Directors Association.
Pullen is a former state Vocal Chairman and Past-President of the Texas Music Educators Association. In 1993, the University Interscholastic League of Texas awarded Pullen the Denius-UIL Sponsor Excellence Award in choral music. In the fall of 2005, Pullen was awarded the highly coveted Howard A. White Excellence in Teaching Award, Pepperdine University. And in the summer of 2010, he was presented with the Texas Choirmaster Award, the highest honor conferred by the Texas Choral Directors Association.
After 45 years of teaching Pullen has left the schoolhouse but has never acquired full retirement. Pullen served as director of the Bay Area Chorus from 1970-1975 and returned as Artistic Director of the BAC in 2014. He is currently in his 58th year of directing choirs. He continues to serve as an adjudicator and clinician for numerous high school choirs and honor choirs throughout Texas.
