From studying the score to conducting the final performance, there are often moments where a conductor would like more than anything to take a look inside the heads of the instrumentalists they are working with. The knowledge of what an ensemble needs, wants, or expects from the conductor can be invaluable to the collaborative process. Throughout my decade-long career playing and teaching trumpet professionally and at the same time working as a church choir director, while also studying both at a doctoral level, I have gained a unique perspective on the relationship between choral conductor and instrumentalist. My presentation will aim to further show just how intertwined the choral and instrumental disciplines are by sharing my own experiences from both in front and within the orchestra. Topics will include score preparation, rehearsal strategies, conducting techniques, and other insights.
