With the explosive population growth in Texas, primarily focused around minority populations, it is important to take a look at how the demographic breakdowns of both students and teachers impact our school orchestra programs. The purpose of this round table panel discussion is to provide a safe, positive space for orchestra directors to discuss what it means to have and embrace ethnic diversity in the orchestra classroom. This is a follow-up conversation to the panel discussion held in January of 2023 between the Texas Orchestra Directors Association (TODA) and the American Musicological Society (AMS) on Diversity in Music - Making the K-12 Orchestra Ethically Inclusive, in which the panel discussed the ethical incorporation of diverse repertoire in the K-12 orchestral classroom. This panel will continue these important conversations by digging deeper into diversity in the orchestra classroom.
